Checking the route

Make the upper viewing area the main stop at Gullfoss, then decide whether the lower paths belong in your day. The waterfall is a two-step drop into the Hvítá canyon, so a wider view has value of its own. Getting closer to the water is an additional walk, with a separate decision about spray, ice and the climb back.

Arrive at the signed Gullfoss visitor area and keep your vehicle or agreed pickup there for the return. This is a road-access sightseeing stop; a booking that includes Gullfoss should name its meeting place and departure time. Do not assume that the time at the waterfall includes a meal or both levels of paths.

The water disappears into the canyon

The regional tourism authority describes an upper drop of 11 m and a lower drop of 21 m. The changing direction of the falls and the canyon below are the features to look for, rather than a single front-on cascade. Wind and spray affect how comfortably you can stand and look.

Follow the signed paths to the available upper viewpoints first. If the lower route is open and suitable, use the designated connection down, then return by the same permitted connection to your arrival area. Leave enough time for the ascent before any tour departure. There is no need to add the lower section to make the stop worthwhile.

Lower paths are conditional

Visit Iceland specifically notes that lower viewing paths may close in winter because of ice and snow. A year-round destination description therefore does not mean every platform is available. Follow barriers and on-site instructions; a closed path changes the visit to the views that remain accessible.

Check Safetravel before the drive. Its October 18, 2026 alert warns of storm and heavy rain across Iceland from 15:00 to midnight, with difficult driving conditions. This matters to both the exposed viewpoints and the journey home. The alert is a dated condition, not a forecast for the rest of the season.

The reserve rules prohibit damaging vegetation and geological formations; drone flight requires permission. Keep the visit on the managed paths. If the return climb or conditions make the lower route doubtful, stay with the upper views and use the remaining daylight for the road journey. The shoulder-season planning guide helps leave room for that change.
