Bastei from Rathen: Climb and Return on the Basteiweg

Use the reopened direct path from Rathen for the sandstone bridge and Elbe views, while respecting the remaining storm-damage closures.

Checking the route

Approaching the Bastei from Rathen gives the sandstone bridge its height: you climb from the Elbe-side village to the rock formations and views above it. Choose the direct Basteiweg in both directions. It is a steep walking outing with long flights of steps, not a level stroll from the riverside.

Arrive at Kurort Rathen station on the S1 corridor, then use the ferry to cross from the station side to Niederrathen. Check your actual train journey and ferry operation before departure. On the village side, follow the currently open signed Basteiweg uphill to the Basteibrücke and Basteiaussicht. Keep time for the same descent, the ferry crossing back and the walk to your train.

Use the direct path within the remaining closures

The national park's storm-recovery update, updated October 8, 2026, explicitly identifies the Basteiweg, Bastei bridge and main viewpoint as accessible from Rathen. This follows the path's reopening on August 7 after the July 31 storm.

The same update retains closures in the lower Amselgrund and adjoining damaged forest. Lohmen's October 5 update says clearance and repair around Amselsee and the Felsenbühne continue. Its target of finishing work in October is not a reopening announcement.

Follow current Basteiweg signs and barriers. Do not turn this outing into the older Amselsee or theatre circuit simply because those routes appear on a leaflet. Check the park's route service before travel and respect any newer restriction on arrival. The opened direct route does not cancel the forest closure around it.

Keep the river crossing in the return plan

The municipal ferry page says VVO tickets and the Deutschlandticket are not valid. It lists free travel for visitors holding Kurort Rathen's own guest card; check that exact entitlement rather than assuming every regional guest card works.

At the top, give yourself time for the bridge's sandstone setting and the view over the Elbe valley, then descend while there is still comfortable daylight. Our car-free nature-trip guide helps keep the ferry and station connection part of the walking day.
