Pont d’Espagne and Lac de Gaube: Waterfalls or a Lake Walk?

Decide between the waterfall visit and the climb to Lac de Gaube, with the summer lifts already closed in October 2026.

Pont d’Espagne can be a waterfall stop or the start of a mountain-lake walk. For a short visit, stay near the falls and bridge. For Lac de Gaube, plan an uphill walk and its full descent; the lake is not beside the parking area.

The distinction matters especially now. Cauterets’ current page states that the summer lifts closed on September 27, 2026. On an October visit, do not build the day around riding up or taking a lift down after walking to the lake.

The waterfall visit starts at Puntas

Travel from Cauterets to the Pont d’Espagne/Puntas parking area by your arranged road transport. The tourism office describes the waterfall as about five minutes on foot from the parking. Walk to the designated bridge and viewing area, then return by the same approach to your vehicle or pickup.

That makes a complete visit when waterfalls are your priority or the group wants limited walking. It does not require adding the lake to make the journey worthwhile. Wet ground and steps still deserve suitable footwear; a short approach is not an accessibility certification.

Gaube is a separate uphill commitment

The lake page gives about 1 hour 30 minutes one way on the GR 10 from Pont d’Espagne. Return by the same walking route unless you have confirmed an operating alternative for your date. Allow for the descent, time beside the lake and the approach back to Puntas when setting your return meeting time.

The shore opens a different view from the wooded waterfall area, with the valley continuing beyond the lake. Stop at the lake for this outing; an onward refuge hike needs a separate plan. If the ascent is slower than expected, return before reaching the shore and keep enough time for the descent.

Dogs require particular care in this decision. The published park exception allows the lake approach with a leashed dog via the lifts; it does not authorize taking a dog up the GR 10. Closed lifts therefore change whether that lake option works for your party.

Recheck Cauterets’ lift notice, weather and road conditions before leaving town. No current village shuttle timetable was available in the lake page, so a shuttle should not be the unconfirmed link in either outing. The shoulder-season guide helps distinguish a year-round place from seasonal transport.
