Gavarnie from the Village: Stop at the Hôtellerie View
Walk the main path to the Hôtellerie du Cirque and back, keeping the steeper waterfall-base extension separate.

The main path from Gavarnie leads into a limestone amphitheater, with the Grande Cascade visible against the cirque walls. You do not have to reach the waterfall’s foot to see why this is a memorable mountain setting. The Hôtellerie du Cirque is a clear destination for the standard walk and the point to turn back.
The official walking description lists 7.9 km, 2 hours 30 minutes and 226 m ascent for the out-and-back from the village to the Hôtellerie. It rates that itinerary easy; the route nevertheless becomes stonier and includes climbs.
Follow the principal path into the cirque
Arrive by the D 921 and use the signed parking at the entrance to Gavarnie. Continue on foot toward the tourism office and the village’s main street. The official route crosses the gave, follows the broad riverside track and passes Pont de Nadau without crossing it. Keep to the principal path rather than taking the Espuguettes or Bellevue branches. It climbs through a viewpoint and woodland to the Courade plateau, then makes the final ascent to the Hôtellerie. Return the same way to the village and parking.
The named building is a route endpoint, not a promise that its restaurant will be open. Carry what you need for the walk instead of making food service essential to getting back.
The waterfall base is an extension
Beyond the Hôtellerie, the official description classifies the waterfall-base option as difficult, adding about 45 minutes up, 35 minutes back and 200 m of elevation. Steep stony ground and falling-rock warnings make it a separate decision. Those figures are additional to the village walk; they are not included in its 2 hour 30 minute profile.
Dogs are prohibited between the Hôtellerie and the waterfall; the village-to-Hôtellerie path allows them on a leash. The official route strongly discourages the base extension in winter and spring because of avalanches and unstable snow bridges. Access normally becomes possible in June, sometimes only by mid-June, depending on conditions. A spring village walk does not establish access to the waterfall’s foot.
For a first outing, stop at the Hôtellerie view. Do not add the extension simply because the waterfall appears close across the open ground.
Snow changes the plan. The winter guidance says the Hôtellerie and waterfall are not accessible in winter because of avalanche paths. Before a shoulder-season visit, confirm the current principal-path conditions with Gavarnie tourism, +33 5 62 92 49 10. Seasonal bus references on the destination and route pages differ, so this road-arrival outline does not assume a bus number or an October departure. A turnaround time is useful even on the main path when daylight is short.
