Choose the short rapids return beside the dolomite wall, leaving the longer Oulanka circuits and winter crossings out of the day.

Checking the route

For Kiutaköngäs, start at Oulanka Visitor Centre and follow the river to the rapids, then return by the same trail. The cascade against the dolomite wall gives the walk a clear destination without committing to the longer Karhunkierros or Könkään keino routes that share parts of the path.

The current route profile lists 2.4 km and about an hour, while its detailed return description says 2 km and separately describes a rest area 200 m beyond the rapids. Allow for the longer published figure if distance is important, and confirm the exact turnaround with the visitor center rather than treating the shorter number as your whole day's walking.

Follow the wooden gate to the river

Arrive at the visitor-center parking area. The official trail description starts under a wooden gate at one end of the center. Follow the broad route alongside Oulankajoki, with gentle hills and ground-built stairs.

Near Kiutaköngäs, a wooden trail bridge crosses the old log-floating chute blasted into the rock. The rocky area gives a view along the 300 m rapids; move carefully on those surfaces. For this outing, return along the same route to the visitor center after viewing the falls. The optional rest area beyond the rapids adds walking and should be included deliberately.

Year-round use still means winter footing

The park describes the route as open year-round, but explicitly says there is no winter maintenance. Walkers may compact the snow, and sections can be slippery. Judge the hills, stairs and rock surfaces by the conditions you find, and ask the visitor center about the return before leaving its area.

Read the park's current notices. The October 12, 2026 cable-boat removal concerns the different Keroharjun kuiskaus Trail; it does not turn this riverbank walk into a ferry route. Stay with the named Kiutaköngäs return rather than adding a longer trail because its paint marks appear along the way.

Take your litter out and bring what you need for the stop without depending on a campfire. Before taking another Oulanka branch, compare its start and finish with this walk using the trail-description guide.
