Checking the route

For the classic view toward the Seven Sisters, you can stay on the Seaford Head side of Cuckmere Haven. Start at South Hill Barn and choose the surfaced linear viewpoint route. It offers coastal views without committing to the full cliff walk toward Eastbourne or a crossing at the river mouth.

Reach South Hill Barn car park by turning from the A259 into Chyngton Lane, using BN25 4AR for the trail's published start. On arrival, use the local route information to identify Route B. The official walking page describes a wide surfaced path with a slight incline, ending at a turning point near the golf course and mast. Turn there and retrace the same track to the barn.

Choose the surfaced line deliberately

The nearby routes have different surfaces and destinations. Route A is a shorter, relatively level circuit with viewpoint benches. Route C goes toward the coastguard cottages and continues on a coastal public right of way. For this outing, keep Route B's surfaced return rather than automatically joining the cottage circuit.

There are no toilets or refreshments at this trail site. Plan those before arrival; the Seven Sisters visitor centre is at a separate location across the valley, not at South Hill Barn. The official bus approach from Chyngton Lane stop adds about 0.8 miles each way to reach the barn and includes a gradient as steep as 1 in 9. Check your actual service and return before choosing that arrival. Our car-free nature guide helps count this extra approach.

Leave the river mouth out of the route

The current river-mouth warning says it should never be used as a footpath: depth, cold and currents are unpredictable. The designated coastal route goes around Cuckmere Haven. Low tide is not permission to wade across.

Stay well back from cliff edges, which can collapse without warning. Check local signs and the park's updates before travel. A return along the same surfaced line gives this visit a clear finish at South Hill Barn, with no river crossing needed.
