Las Pailas: Rincón de la Vieja’s Volcanic Forest Loop
Choose the 3 km Las Pailas loop for mud pots and forest, keeping waterfall hikes and the closed active-crater trail separate.

Las Pailas is the Rincón de la Vieja walk to choose for geothermal features close to the forest: fumaroles, bubbling water and mud pots, with open stretches between trees. The green circuit gives those features a coherent outing of their own.
Ask for the Las Pailas sector when arranging transport. The national park also has a Santa María sector, and nearby private attractions use the volcano’s name.
Follow the green loop
SINAC describes Sendero Circular Las Pailas as a 3 km (1.9 mi) circuit, marked green, with an estimated two-hour visit. It passes forest and open areas where the vegetation changes between dry and wetter forest.
The geothermal features reward a slow pace. Stop at the authorized viewing positions and keep the boundary between path and active ground intact. The park lists temperatures of 78–106°C at these features; a small mud pool can still be extremely hot.
Two hours is the park’s trail estimate. Add the drive from Liberia, admission, stops and the return to your accommodation when arranging collection. Tell the provider you want the green Las Pailas circuit and a return from that sector’s visitor center.
Give the waterfalls a separate decision
The orange waterfall trail is a longer commitment. SINAC lists La Cangreja as 5 km (3.1 mi) one way, 10 km (6.2 mi) return, and estimates four to five hours for the waterfall outing. That changes the shape of the day. Swimming is prohibited at both La Cangreja and Escondida.
SINAC also requires entry to the waterfall trail before noon and may regulate access in the rainy season. If choosing that outing instead, agree an early start with the rangers so its four-to-five-hour return estimate, pauses and your exit all fit before the sector closes at 3 p.m.
There is also a route toward Santa María. Its existence does not make it part of the 3 km circuit or supply a return transfer from the other sector. Use the visitor-center map to distinguish the green loop from those departures before starting.
The active-crater trail is listed as closed because of volcanic activity. Older descriptions of its ascent and favorable season on the same page do not override that closure.
Choose the date and return together
SINAC publishes Las Pailas hours of Tuesday–Sunday, 8 a.m.–3 p.m., closed Monday, with tickets sold through its official online reservation system. Follow the booking link from the park page and check the sector’s notices before arranging the drive. Published opening hours cannot confirm which paths will be open on a future date.
Bring closed shoes, water and rain protection, and leave time to reach the visitor center before closing. If your group mainly wants a waterfall and river setting, compare Río Celeste as another day. Las Pailas earns its place through the volcanic ground and changing forest; a focused visit leaves time to stop at both.
