Palo Verde: Choose a Wetland Stop or a Viewpoint Walk
Compare La Jacana’s wetland boardwalk with La Roca’s viewpoint trail, and arrange the road approach to Palo Verde National Park.

At Palo Verde, decide whether you want to spend time beside the wetland or climb for a wider view. La Jacana is the boardwalk option; La Roca is the viewpoint walk. They are different ways to look at the landscape, and neither requires turning the day into a tour of every trail.
The park protects wetlands and forest in the lower Tempisque basin. That makes it a different outing from Costa Rica’s high cloud forests: here, the water level, the visible birds and the state of the approach road all matter to the visit you choose.
Choose where you want to look
SINAC’s park page describes La Jacana as a 20 m elevated path over the Palo Verde lagoon, intended for bird observation. Choose it when you want to pause and watch rather than make walking distance the main activity. Its short published length does not establish a completely accessible journey from the entrance; ask staff about that whole connection if you need step-free access.
La Roca is listed as a 540 m route to a viewpoint over the lagoon, Tempisque River and Gulf of Nicoya. Choose it for an overview of how wetland and river fit into the wider landscape. Confirm whether the 540 m covers one way or the full return, and how the path links to the visitor area, before choosing it.
You can decide between them at the information point after hearing about current conditions. If your priority is birdwatching, time spent standing still may serve you better than adding a second trail. Read how to watch wildlife without relying on a sighting guarantee before making a particular species the test of a successful day.
Water changes the visit
Do not book the day around a photograph of a fully flooded lagoon or a dense gathering of birds. Water and wildlife vary, so ask about the current lagoon conditions and which observation points are useful for your date. Describe what you want to do—watch from the boardwalk or reach the higher view—rather than asking only whether “Palo Verde is open.”
The same road approach can serve two quite different days. A wetland-focused visit needs time to wait and look; a trail visit needs an appropriate surface and enough time to return. Avoid adding a boat excursion to either by assumption. A river-tour pickup elsewhere is not automatically park admission, transport to these trails, or a return ride from the park.
Reach the park’s visitor area and keep your ride
SINAC’s official access description directs road visitors from Bagaces along roughly 20 km of gravel road to the park entrance, then another 10 km to the administrative area. These are separate stages. Tell your driver you want the park visitor and trail area, not merely the gate.
Use your own vehicle or agree the full return journey with a driver before setting out. For the rainy season, SINAC recommends a 4×4 because of road conditions. That is a recommendation tied to the road, not proof that every vehicle can pass on a particular date. If access is uncertain, change the day rather than relying on a paid ride to make the road passable.
Hours, payment and the question to ask
The park page lists daily hours of 8:00 am–4:00 pm and card-only payment. Arrive early enough for the internal drive, information stop and your selected outing; 4:00 pm is not a target for starting back from a viewpoint.
The SINAC visitor brochure gives reservaciones.pnpaloverde@sinac.go.cr and park phone +506 2206 5965. Ask which of La Jacana and La Roca is usable, how the Bagaces road is after recent rain, and whether an entry arrangement is needed for your date. Set your pickup after that answer, with time to be back at the vehicle before the park closes.
