Salto Grande: Decide on Cuernos Before You Leave the Falls

Separate the short waterfall stop from the longer Cuernos viewpoint walk, with a return vehicle at the same trailhead.

Time for a photograph

Salto Grande is the short stop; Mirador Cuernos is the extension. Make that decision at the falls, while your return transport is still easy to judge. The waterfall links lakes Nordenskjöld and Pehoé, and the onward walk changes the focus from moving water to the mountain skyline above the lake.

Start with the waterfall plan

Sernatur’s place guide describes driving to a parking area, then walking five to seven minutes to the waterfall viewpoint. Return along that same access if you only want the falls. Its reference to the attraction being 2 km from the main road is not the length of the footpath.

Use your own vehicle or an arranged transfer that explicitly serves the Salto Grande trailhead and includes collection there. A bus service to Pudeto is not automatically a drop-off at this parking area. Confirm the precise meeting point before treating a transport booking as the start of a short walk.

Cuernos needs time in both directions

The tourism guide gives approximately an hour from the falls along Lago Nordenskjöld to Mirador Cuernos. That describes the onward segment. Allow for retracing it, the waterfall approach and stops; do not put the whole extension into a one-hour gap before pickup.

Follow the signed public trail toward the viewpoint and return the same way. If remaining daylight, weather or collection arrangements leave little margin, finish at Salto Grande. A road-trip walking stop works best when the return drive or pickup remains part of the plan.

Check the road as well as the path

Buy admission through the official Pases Parques channel linked by CONAF. Read current notices and ask rangers about the Salto Grande and Cuernos paths on arrival. The published road report includes a closure on Y-150 between Sarmiento and Los Cisnes; a familiar itinerary may need changing. Its road entries do not certify this footpath for a future visit.

Stay on designated paths and behind barriers. Pets and sources of heat are prohibited. The Macizo Paine circuit closure concerns a separate multi-day route; it should neither cancel this day-walk plan by assumption nor be mistaken for permission to walk it.
