Checking the route

El Chucao offers a close look at alerce forest without committing to a mountain hike. The main planning task comes before the trees: Lahuen Ñadi has a controlled gate about 3 km from the monument, and CONAF asks visitors to contact the ranger to arrange entry.

Make the gate part of the appointment

Follow Ruta 226 toward El Tepual airport from Puerto Montt, then the El Rincón approach identified in CONAF’s directions. Contact the ranger at +56 9 8570 2388 before traveling. Opening the remote gate can take 10–40 minutes, depending on staff availability.

Arrange your arrival, confirm that El Chucao is available that day and ask how departure through the gate will work. A short boardwalk is less useful if the access road or exit has been left to chance. Keep those instructions available offline.

Use El Chucao, not Los Carpinteros

El Chucao has 600 linear meters of wooden boardwalk, a ramp and a toilet at the start. That is the published boardwalk length, not a verified loop or a promise that the entire visit totals 600 m. Ask staff to explain the current route and return at the entrance, then use the authorized access to reach your vehicle.

Los Carpinteros is closed until further notice following damage to a walkway and pedestrian bridge. Do not use it as an extension or return link. When choosing by surface and mobility needs, this distinction matters more than the monument’s small size.

The alerce forest grows on very wet volcanic ñadi soils. Keep to the boardwalk rather than stepping into the forest floor. Pets and sources of heat are prohibited.

The regional office also lists ranger Jaime Hernández at jaime.hernandez@conaf.cl. Use the current contact channel to confirm the arrangement, rather than treating an undated opening-hours listing as guaranteed gate access.
