Time for a photograph

Cascatinha Taunay works as a focused visit near Tijuca’s Floresta entrance. Go for the waterfall and the arched stone bridge in front of it, then return to the same gate or parking area. The upper Mirante da Cascatinha is a separate uphill outing, not a viewpoint you must add to understand the falls.

Use the Floresta entrance

The park’s directions identify Praça Afonso Viseu in Alto da Boa Vista as the Floresta sector entrance. This is the relevant destination for a driver or arranged transfer. A general Tijuca National Park pin may send you to another sector.

Enter through the main gate and follow the signed access to Cascatinha Taunay. The park describes the waterfall as near that entrance. Visit the bridge and authorized viewing area, then retrace to your own access point. Arrange a pickup at a precise place outside or at the permitted vehicle area; this short visit does not establish a public-bus return timetable.

The bridge dates from 1860. The waterfall’s name recalls painter Nicolas Antoine Taunay, who lived nearby and painted the scene. Water, masonry and forest make a complete stop without climbing onward. If you want the upper deck, first obtain its route and return details; its advertised roughly 30-minute approach is not the duration of this gate-to-waterfall visit.

Read the current sector rules

The June 2026 rules update gives Floresta pedestrian entry from 06:00 to 17:00 and light-vehicle entry from 08:00 to 17:00, with exit by 18:00. Vehicle numbers remain limited. The waterfall page’s simpler 08:00–17:00 wording does not capture these distinctions. Check the gate’s instructions before relying on an early start.

Bathing directly beneath the waterfall is prohibited. The park identifies the Job de Alcântara pool below the bridge as the permitted bathing place; that exception does not make the cascade itself a swimming area. This plan stays with viewing, especially when rocks are wet.

Severe weather can change access. Check current park news and local alerts before the drive and walk. The August 21 wind warning was for that date, not proof of a present closure or present clearance.
