Vorderer Gosausee: Stay Beside the Lake
Walk the lower Gosausee circuit beneath the Dachstein, without adding an upper-lake climb or a cable-car dependency.

Vorderer Gosausee is the choice for a lake circuit with the Dachstein in front of you and the Gosaukamm rising to one side. Stay on the lower shore path if you want a contained walk. The upper lake and the Zwieselalm are different outings, even though their paths begin in the same area.
Water, forest and steep rock faces shape the circuit. You see the mountain from changing angles as you move around the shore; a full reflection depends on weather and water conditions. There is enough to walk for without making a cable-car ride the condition of the day.
A circuit that returns to the same lakefront
The regional tourism route gives 4.2 km and about one hour for the circuit from Gasthof Gosausee back to Gasthof Gosausee. Allow longer for stops. Start on the left-hand side of the lake as its description recommends.
At the far end, a forest road branches toward Hinterer Gosausee. To remain on the lower-lake circuit, keep right and follow the shore back. That junction is the useful decision: a sign for another lake does not mean it is part of the same loop. The return side passes streams and springs before bringing you back to the starting lakefront.
The route is described as very easy in summer, with asphalt, gravel and other surfaces. That is a summer route assessment, not a promise of suitable footing in ice. If you only want a shorter view, walk out along an open shore section and return before the far-end junction.
Get to the lake rather than only to Gosau
Drivers should follow Gosauseestraße to the designated lake parking and read the current parking tariff. The walking route has free entry; parking is separate. Return to the same parking after the circuit.
For public transport, plan to the lake-end Gosaukammbahn stop rather than assuming that arrival in Gosau village finishes the journey. The regional page names services from the Bad Ischl/Steeg–Gosau area, but select the actual date and both directions in the regional journey planner. Keep enough time after the loop to walk back to the stop.
October is the edge of the walking season
The official route lists normal access from May to October depending on weather. It warns against winter use because of avalanches and falling rocks, with no winter maintenance. Check current notices and barriers before starting; a published season does not establish that the path is suitable on your date.
The current route page also says to avoid the circuit, or turn back, during thunderstorms, heavy rain or storms because of falling rocks and branches. Pass through marked hazard areas without stopping, do not linger beneath rock faces and respect barriers. These conditions apply during the walking season too.
The three-lakes description also warns that the circuit closes in winter. Restaurant and cable-car seasons are separate. Carry what you need for the shore walk rather than depending on a particular hut being open. Shoulder-season planning is most useful here when it keeps an optional lift from determining whether your day works.
