Liechtensteinklamm is a walk down into a narrow gorge and back up, with steel stairs, galleries and water below the walkways. The Helix spiral staircase is part of the route, not an optional viewing tower that can be bypassed for an otherwise level outing. Come for the confined rock-and-water setting if the stair climb suits you.

The return is the same walk

St. Johann’s gorge information describes an approximately 1 km path each way, with a total visiting time of about one to 1.5 hours. There is no circular route. You return along the same walkways, meeting people traveling the other way.

The operator lists roughly 440 steps down and the same number back up, with about 100 m of height difference. Some steps are metal grating through which the drop is visible. The Helix descends about 30 m. These details matter more than the short distance if you dislike heights or find repeated stairs difficult.

The gorge is not suitable for pushchairs. Ordinary rain does not automatically close it, but heavy rain, flooding or thunderstorms can. Wear shoes with grip and take a layer: the operator warns that it is substantially cooler inside than outside.

Start at the car park, not the turnstile

The designated day car parks are free during opening hours, but they are 500–800 m from the ticket office. Add that approach at both ends to the gorge walk. Do not arrive at the parking with only the advertised visiting time left before your next appointment.

From St. Johann, follow the official Liechtensteinklamm directions to its signed parking. Walk to the ticket office, enter the gorge, continue only as far as the open visitor route allows, then retrace the path to the entrance and your parking area. The stairs remain part of the return even if you stop early.

October has a shorter entry window

The official 2026 opening table lists October 1–November 1, 9 am–4 pm, last admission at 4 pm. Last admission is not the time at which to arrive at a distant parking space. For an unhurried autumn visit, reach the ticket office well before the final slot and leave room for the full return.

Check the operator’s current status before traveling, especially after heavy weather. Seasonal dates do not override a weather closure. Buy through its linked ticket shop or at the entrance as available for your day; do not mistake an online ticket for an exemption from the stairs or any closure. If those physical conditions do not suit your party, choose a different walk before making the approach. The difficulty guide is useful for comparing steps and exposure with distance.
