Echerntal from Hallstatt: Follow the Waldbach into the Woods
Take a bounded valley walk from Hallstatt, keeping the difficult final approach to Waldbachstrub separate.

Echerntal offers a different Hallstatt walk: leave the lakeside streets for the Waldbach, old houses, woodland and the artists’ theme trail. For a gentler outing, follow the lower trail from P2 toward the pavilion and Simony monument, then return the same way. You do not need to reach the waterfall at the valley’s end to make this a worthwhile change of scene.
The distinction matters because the final approach to Waldbachstrub is a black-rated mountain path. The regional tourism page warns of possible fall exposure and requires sure-footedness, a head for heights, suitable equipment and fitness. Its general description of a mostly gentle valley does not cancel that warning.
A lower-valley visit with a clear finish
Start at Hallstatt P2, beside the salt-mine railway’s lower station, as named in the official theme-trail description. Follow the signed Echerntal trail along the Waldbach through the settlement. The pavilion and information boards introduce painters and writers associated with the valley, including Adalbert Stifter and Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller.
Continue toward the Simony monument if conditions and your time allow. Use it as a turnaround for this lower outing and retrace the same valley approach to P2. The glacier garden is a separately signed diversion; do not add it automatically if the aim is a straightforward return.
This shorter plan has no promised fixed walking time. Set your finish around the pace of the slowest walker and the return journey you actually have. The published figures for the full waterfall circuit are not figures for this lower out-and-back.
When the waterfall changes the day
Waldbachstrub is the more demanding choice. Water drops into the wooded gorge at the valley head, and the final climb puts you on different terrain from the settlement and streamside approach. If your party is not comfortable with the explicit black-path conditions, turn around before that section rather than interpreting “theme trail” as an easy rating for the whole visit.
For the full route, use the tourism office’s current instructions and the signs on site. Snow, ice and wind can increase difficulty; a year-round opening description is conditional, and the path can close in snow or icy conditions. The hike-difficulty guide explains why the hardest section matters even when most of a route is gentler.
Return to Hallstatt before your onward journey
Drivers finish back at P2. If you arrived by rail, Hallstatt station is across the lake: the tourism board’s arrival chain includes a boat transfer into the village. Your visit therefore ends with a walk back through Hallstatt and the appropriate ferry before the train, not at the Echerntal turnaround. Check the ferry and train connections for your date before deciding how far to go. For current trail questions, the Hallstatt tourism office lists hallstatt@salzkammergut.at.
