Checking the route

Spit Bridge to Manly is a walking day that ends in a different place from its start. Choose it for a sequence of small harbour beaches, bushland around Dobroyd Head and the arrival at Manly’s waterfront. Use public transport or an arranged transfer so finishing the walk does not leave you ten kilometers from your car.

Start north of the bridge

The NPWS route is 10 km (6.2 mi) one way, with 3½–4½ hours suggested before longer stops. Its signed start is on Spit Bridge’s north side. It follows Fisher Bay, Sandy Bay and Clontarf before entering national park at Castle Rock, then rounds Dobroyd Head toward Manly.

Do not follow the waterline blindly. High-tide detours form part of the route, and Northern Beaches Council currently lists a Castle Rock upgrade diversion. Follow the signed land route; add time rather than forcing the normal distance into an exact appointment. Grotto Point lighthouse is a separate side trip and is not included in this plan.

Plan the two transport journeys together

Use the Transport NSW planner for your base to Spit Bridge, checking the precise alighting stop and walk to the north-side start. Then plan Manly Wharf to your base for the likely finishing time. A ferry toward Circular Quay can suit a central Sydney stay; choose a bus connection if that better matches your destination. Confirm both legs for the actual date rather than assuming the return follows the outbound road.

If you drive to the start, also arrange the transfer from Manly back to that car. Our point-to-point guide helps make that extra leg explicit.

The national park section is open sunrise to sunset, subject to weather and fire restrictions. The current notice includes fox-control baiting at Dobroyd Head through January 2027: do not touch baits or devices. Pets are not permitted in the national park. Keep beach stops inside the daylight you have left for the bushland and Manly finish.
