Maits Rest: A Rainforest Circuit West of Apollo Bay
Choose the compact Maits Rest forest loop from its own car park, with current access confirmed before adding it to a Great Ocean Road drive.

Maits Rest is a compact forest stop on a Great Ocean Road drive west of Apollo Bay. Its raised boardwalk crosses fern gullies and moss-covered roots, bringing the cool temperate rainforest close without a long hike. Choose it when you want one complete forest circuit and a return to the same car park. Confirm that the circuit and car park are open before making it a fixed stop.
Keep the forest stop distinct from the drive
The current visitor page places the walk about fifteen minutes west of Apollo Bay and lists a thirty-minute return outing. Start and finish at Maits Rest car park. Follow the signed self-guided circuit rather than treating forest paths beyond it as an extension.
The interest is in the tree-fern gullies, large rainforest trees and the boardwalk’s close view of roots and vegetation. Give the stop enough space in your driving day for those details. A half-hour walking allowance does not include finding a parking place, getting everyone ready or returning to the road.
For a day with several stops, use the road-trip guide to decide which walk has priority. Maits Rest can fit a smaller walking appetite, but that does not make an unchecked forest path a reliable wet-weather backup.
Confirm Maits Rest itself before setting out
An older Parks Victoria notice says Maits Rest was temporarily closed after treefall damage, without stating a reopening date. The present visitor listing describes the walk, while the former dedicated Parks Victoria route URL no longer provides it. These sources do not together establish access for your travel day.
Before adding the stop to a fixed itinerary, call Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority on 1300 736 533 and ask whether the complete Maits Rest circuit and car park are available. Parks Victoria explains the shared management of Great Otway National Park; a general park page is not a substitute for that exact question. If access remains unresolved, keep the time in Apollo Bay rather than arriving expecting to walk around barriers. Dogs are not allowed on the Maits Rest walk.
