From Bundeena: Walk to the Wedding Cake Rock View

Choose a bounded Coast Track return from Bundeena instead of a one-way commitment to Wattamolla, with rough terrain and closure rules included.

Checking the route

For a coastal walk from Bundeena without a second road pickup, follow the Coast Track to the viewing area at Wedding Cake Rock and return the same way. You get sandstone cliffs and coastal heath while keeping the day tied to one departure point. Continuing to Wattamolla changes both the distance and the way home.

The viewing area is the destination

NPWS advises at least one hour each way from Bundeena. The track is rough, steep and rocky in places; this is not a level promenade despite the familiar photographs of the white rock. Allow at least two hours for the walking return, plus stops and your approach through town.

Stay behind the fence. The white sandstone is dangerously soft and prone to collapse; standing or sitting on Wedding Cake Rock or approaching the cliff edge is unsafe. Return north along the marked track rather than adding Marley Beach as an unplanned extension.

Match the return to your arrival

The track begins at the end of Beachcomber Avenue. The official access guide lists parking there. If you arrive by the Cronulla–Bundeena ferry, add the 1.5 km (0.9 mi) walk from the wharf to the trackhead, and the same distance afterward. Confirm both ferry sailings with the operator before leaving Cronulla. Your turnaround must leave time for the track, town approach and boarding margin; the turnaround-time guide helps work backward.

Two rules can cancel the plan

The Wedding Cake Rock track closes during Total Fire Bans. Check that rule before beginning, not only the weather forecast.

The current deer-control notice also closes named areas, including asset-protection zones beside Bundeena, from sunset to sunrise Monday–Thursday, excluding school holidays, through 18 December 2026. Follow the signed footprint; the notice’s exception for booked campground access does not authorize a night walk. Choose a daylight outing with enough time to return, and carry water for both directions.
