Grotto Falls: A Forest Return from Roaring Fork
Plan the Trillium Gap approach to the walk-behind waterfall, with parking tags, the one-way road and a published distance conflict kept visible.

Grotto Falls is reached through old-growth forest and rhododendron on Trillium Gap Trail. Its unusual feature is the path behind the falling water, inside a mountain cove of mossy boulders. Make the waterfall your turnaround and return to the same trailhead; continuing uphill on Trillium Gap is a different hike.
Resolve the distance before fitting it into a tight day
The current NPS hike page gives two incompatible totals: its overview says 4.2 km (2.6 mi) round trip from Trillium Gap Trailhead, while the separate Length heading says 6.4 km (4 mi). It does not explain the difference. Ask Sugarlands Visitor Center or park information at 865-436-1200 which total applies to the currently signed start before setting a firm return time.
The route itself is clear: start at Trillium Gap Trailhead on Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail, follow the named trail to Grotto Falls and retrace it. Expect stream crossings, roots, rocks and muddy or slippery sections after rain. Carry enough flexibility for the longer published figure until the park resolves it; do not turn either figure into a guaranteed duration. Out-and-back planning keeps the return part of the same commitment.
The car follows a different return
From Gatlinburg traffic light 8, use Historic Nature Trail Road and Cherokee Orchard to reach the one-way Roaring Fork drive. Stop for restrooms near Rainbow Falls before entering the one-way section, then continue to Trillium Gap parking. After the hike, drive onward with the one-way road rather than trying to reverse the approach.
Buy a parking tag before entering this area: tags are required for parking longer than 15 minutes and are not sold here. Parking is limited; a tag does not secure a space. Motorhomes, buses and trailers are prohibited on Roaring Fork. Its published 2026 season is April 17–November 29, subject to weather closures. Pets are not allowed on the Grotto Falls trail.
