For the view down over Grand Prismatic Spring, start at the Fairy Falls trailhead and walk to the overlook. The spring-side boardwalk at Midway Geyser Basin gives a different, lower perspective. Choosing the overlook means choosing its separate parking area and a short climb, then returning the way you came.

Use the Fairy Falls start

The NPS overlook route begins at the Fairy Falls parking lot, 1.6 km (1 mi) south of Midway Geyser Basin. Parking is limited. Follow the signed overlook route rather than treating the Midway boardwalk entrance as its trailhead.

The complete out-and-back is 1.9 km (1.2 mi), climbing about 32 m (105 ft) on the outward leg. NPS estimates 1–2 hours. Stop at the elevated view and retrace the route to your car; continuing toward Fairy Falls makes a different, longer hike. Route shapes explains why the total already includes the return.

Separate road season from trail permission

For a regular car visit, the 2026 road calendar projects Madison–Old Faithful access through October 31, subject to weather. That is not a promise that the road will stay open on a snowy day. Use the live road page or recorded information at 307-344-2117 before driving, and confirm the return road as well as the approach.

Older advice may mention a March 10–Memorial Day closure for this area. Yellowstone decommissioned the Firehole bear management area in 2024, removing that recurring restriction. Temporary wildlife closures can still occur; the park also issued and later lifted closures after a May 2026 bear incident. Use the current southwest trail report, rather than carrying an old seasonal rule into a new trip.

Pets are not allowed on the overlook trail. Follow current bear preparation advice and keep at least 91 m (100 yd) from bears, wolves and cougars and 23 m (25 yd) from other wildlife. If an animal blocks the way, allow it space rather than making the overlook a deadline.
