Dark Hollow Falls is a descent beside a stream followed by a climb back to Skyline Drive. Choose it for a waterfall-focused walk if everyone is comfortable with steep, rocky ground. The shorter distance does not remove the return effort: the parking area sits above the falls.

Keep the waterfall as your turnaround

Start at Dark Hollow Falls parking area at Skyline Drive mile 50.7. Follow the named trail downhill to the falls, then return by the same route. Do not treat the word “circuit” in the NPS summary as an instruction to find a different way back; the detailed directions explicitly retrace the trail.

The park lists roughly 2.3 km (1.4 mi) total and 134 m (440 ft) of gain, with a nominal 1 hour 15 minutes. Its rounded outward figure is 0.75 mi, so the numbers do not reconcile exactly. Treat them as an approximate scale, not a measured track for timing a tight appointment. Wet rocks and stops can lengthen the outing.

If the descent already feels uncomfortable, turn back while the climb remains manageable. Understanding elevation gain is useful here: returning to the starting point still means regaining the height lost on the way down.

Skyline Drive is part of the outing

Reach mile 50.7 through an official vehicle entrance, then leave by a permitted, open road after returning to the car. The Skyline Drive page directs visitors to current alerts for weather closures; the old road-status telephone recording is no longer updated. Pay park admission with a card or mobile payment under the current cashless system.

Pets are prohibited on Dark Hollow Falls Trail, while service animals are welcome. This guide keeps the route to the falls and back; the pet-friendly Rose River route needs a separate day plan. Check park alerts before driving, including any new wildlife restriction affecting the chosen trail.
