Velika Planina: Plan a Pasture Walk Around Both Lifts

Velika Planina's pasture and shepherd settlement make sense as a walking day with lift access, provided both lifts are running. The cable car gets you onto the plateau; the chairlift serves a higher part of it. Neither ride delivers you directly into the shepherd village.

For October 17, 2026: postpone this lift-assisted outing. The operator announces annual maintenance from October 15 through November 15, 2026, and currently marks both the cable car and chairlift closed. Treat November 16 as a date to check again, not a guaranteed reopening.

Low roofs across the pasture

The herdsmen’s settlement is recognizable by huts with pine-shingle roofs extending low toward the ground. That architecture is a reason to walk into the settlement rather than stop at the lift station. The small Preskar Museum hut preserves an oval form built in wood and stone, but its interior opens during the grazing season; seeing the settlement does not mean the museum will be open.

Know which station you are aiming for

For an operating day, arrive at the lower cable-car station in Kamniška Bistrica, with the return to the same station built into your transport plan. The operator's walking page describes a large parking area there. If a driver brings you, use the lower station as the pickup point too.

After the cable car, continue on the chairlift toward Gradišče for the village-focused version. The operator describes roughly 10–15 minutes on foot from the top to the shepherd settlement. That is one connecting walk, not the duration of your entire visit. Walking among the huts, stopping, and returning uphill to the lift all need additional time.

The alternative from the upper cable-car station involves more walking. The published estimate of 30 minutes to Zeleni Rob is not a 30-minute village visit: the same page gives 45–55 minutes to the shepherd settlement. Choose the chairlift approach if your priority is time around the settlement rather than the approach climb.

A return needs two operating lifts

Check the operator's current information and timetable before leaving the valley. Record the last downhill chairlift and the last cable car, then leave the village early enough to reach the first and connect with the second. A late cable car does not help if you have already missed the chairlift and cannot manage the walk down to it.

Use the maintenance notice for the current closure. Do not substitute a drive to a different trailhead during maintenance unless you have separately planned that hike and its road access.

Pasture paths, seasonal hospitality

Stay on marked paths and keep dogs on a leash. The operator dates the shepherds' dairy-food huts to mid-June–mid-September, so an autumn visit should not depend on buying lunch from them. Bring food and layers for a day above the valley. For the choice between riding and adding an approach climb, elevation gain is more useful than comparing walking minutes alone.
