Diamond Hill: Follow the Lower Loop to Big Rock
Take the blue-marked 3 km circuit from Connemara’s visitor centre for Atlantic views below the summit trail.

The Lower Diamond Hill Trail gives you a clear destination below the summit: Big Rock, the highest point of the blue-marked circuit. Across its 3 km loop, old bog road, gravel, steps and boardwalk lead onto open ground with Atlantic views. The national park grades it moderate and gives 90 m of ascent.
Start and finish at Connemara National Park's visitor centre near Letterfrack. From the N59, use the signed park entrance and follow the access road to the main car park. Parking and park admission are free. Follow the blue arrows around the lower hill and back to the centre.
Choose the lower circuit before the junction
The official profiles distinguish the blue Lower Diamond route from the red Upper Diamond trail. The upper route is strenuous and climbs onward toward the summit. For a moderate outing to Big Rock, keep the blue return rather than following red markers upward because the summit looks close.
The lower loop still includes steps and exposed ground. Choose footwear for wet gravel and boardwalk, bring a layer for the hillside and leave time to descend comfortably. A coastal view does not require reaching the mountain's top. Our route-shape guide helps when a circuit shares its opening with a longer route.
Check warnings and centre days
The current park information states that the grounds close during orange and red weather warnings. Respect that closure.
The centre currently opens Wednesday to Sunday, 09:00–17:30, and on bank holiday Mondays. A June 29, 2026 notice explains Monday and Tuesday closures from July 1, except bank holiday Mondays; trails and the other listed services remain open on those ordinary closure days. Separate industrial action closed visitor services on October 14. Recheck notices for your day rather than assuming a centre's opening guarantees trail access.
After the blue circuit, return to the same car park. Keep dogs leashed and take litter out of the bog-and-hill landscape.
