Checking the route

Choose one bank of Dettifoss for the outing. The west approach uses paved road 862, with limited winter service. The east approach uses gravel road 864, which closes when autumn snow arrives and reopens in spring only when conditions allow. A short-looking distance across the river does not give you a pedestrian crossing between the two visits.

The attraction is the broad fall of the Jökulsá á Fjöllum into the canyon. The park describes a drop of about 44–45 m and a width around 100 m. You are choosing how to approach that canyon, rather than choosing two interchangeable parking lots.

The west-side walk has changed

The park's May 25, 2026 notice permanently closes Fosshvamm to all traffic following landslides and investigations of cracks beneath the ground. It describes removing infrastructure and moving paths, while developing viewpoints north of the waterfall. Follow the current marked route from the west car park and return on that route; do not reconstruct the old approach from photographs.

For the east side, first establish that road 864 is open for your date and suitable for your vehicle using the road authority and current conditions. From the east parking area, use its marked walking route and return to the same parking area.

Keep the visit smaller than the canyon trail

The normal park destination page lists short waterfall walks as well as much longer routes. Its D1 summary and detailed distance disagree, and west-side infrastructure has changed. Plan by the current marked route and ask the park at +3545758400 for its present length if that determines whether you can attempt it. Do not use the old short figure as a walking allowance.

Read the Icelandic alerts index as well as the English page; the west-side change appears in the former. Safetravel also carries an October 18, 2026 storm-and-rain warning from 15:00 to midnight. If roads or conditions rule out your chosen bank, postpone the stop instead of assuming the other approach solves it. Keep the walk tied to the parking area on your chosen bank.
