Checking the route

The Malerwinkl circuit gives you an elevated Königssee view from land, with the boathouses at the beginning and mixed woodland on the return. You can look along the narrow lake toward St. Bartholomä and the Schönfeldspitze without booking a boat trip.

Start at Königssee's main parking area. Walk about 300 m to the Seelände lakefront, turn left and pass the boathouses and boatyard buildings into the national park. The path climbs past the former Café Malerwinkel to the viewpoint, where benches face along the lake.

Return through the forest

Keep to the published Malerwinkl circuit. Beyond the main view, it climbs through mixed forest in two broad bends to another viewpoint, then crosses rolling ground before a steeper final section toward the Jennerbahn valley station. Return from there to your starting car park. The current tourism profile lists 5 km, about 1½ hours and 160 m of ascent; add your own stopping time.

At the Malerwinkl, do not follow the narrow old track continuing along the lake shore. The tourism authority explicitly warns that it has deteriorated and presents a serious fall risk. Follow the forest circuit rather than treating the water's edge as a continuous shoreline walk. Leave the Rabenwand branch for a separately planned outing.

Our route-shape guide helps distinguish a loop's return from a tempting continuation. Here the correct return leads inland toward Jennerbahn, not onward beside the lake.

Check conditions for the circuit you intend

The national park's current path notices should be checked before travel. They list several distinct areas, including October work at the Krautkaser bridge between Hinterbrand and Jenner's middle station. That is not the valley-station return described here. Follow any signs affecting your own route rather than assuming all Jenner references name the same place.

The tourism page says the path to Malerwinkl is cleared and treated in winter. That statement covers the viewpoint approach; it does not promise maintenance of the entire woodland circuit. If winter footing makes the return unsuitable, choose a confirmed shorter visit and retrace the approach instead. Finish at the parking area where you began, with the view as the day's destination rather than a reason to extend along a decayed shore track.
