Visit the forest above Le Mont-Dore by funicular, or take the separate signed walking loop without relying on a lift.

Checking the route

The Salon du Capucin is the forested upper station area above Le Mont-Dore. It makes a useful destination when you want woodland and views back over town without setting out along the Sancy ridges. Reaching the Salon is not the same as climbing the Pic du Capucin.

The historic funicular climbs from Rue René Cassin to the Salon at 1245 m. A return ride keeps the walking commitment flexible: explore the designated paths near the upper station, then return there for the descent. Check the next and final departures before leaving the station area.

October service has gaps

The operator listing, updated October 12, 2026, gives Wednesday–Sunday service through October 24, with a midday break: 10:00–12:10 and 14:00–17:40. The October 25–31 profile changes to Tuesday–Sunday and an earlier 16:30 afternoon finish. Do not treat a general autumn opening as seven-day continuous service.

If the lift is your return, work backward from the day’s final descent and arrive early enough to board. A one-way ticket only makes sense when you have separately chosen a walking descent; the summer combined hiking ticket is not a ready-made route for this forest visit.

The walking loop starts in town

For a self-contained hike, use the Chemin des Montagnes et Salon du Capucin circuit. It starts at Le Mont-Dore tourism office and returns to town, passing toward the Haute Dordogne valley, then using Chemin des Médecins to the Salon and Chemin des Mille Gouttes on the way back. Follow its yellow Chamina markings and detailed route sheet.

The official profile lists 5.89 km and 307 m ascent. Its duration field says 1 hour, while the description says 2 hours; plan with the longer estimate plus stops, and ask the tourism office, +33 4 73 65 20 21, if timing is critical. Neither estimate includes an ascent to the Pic.

The route warning is more decisive than its all-year listing: in ice, do not enter Mille Gouttes without suitable equipment. If conditions or pace do not suit that descent, keep the outing to a return funicular visit while it is running. Compare walking effort using elevation gain rather than assuming a town-side forest path is flat.
