Tarn Hows: Keep to the Main Lakeside Circuit
Choose the firm gravel route around the tarn, leaving the upper viewpoint extension separate from the easier walk.

Tarn Hows offers a tree-framed lake and fell views without a high-level hike. It is also a designed landscape: a nineteenth-century dam joined smaller tarns, with planting arranged around the water. Choose the main gravel circuit when you want the shore and its changing views, rather than an additional climb to an upper viewpoint.
Follow the lower track clockwise
Start at the main Tarn Hows car park, reached by following signs from the B5285 near Coniston or Hawkshead Hill. The National Trust specifically asks drivers to follow those signs rather than satnav. Cross the road, take the left fork down to the lake and pass through the gate. Continue clockwise.
At the crossing path, stay straight on along the main track around the tarn and back to the car park. The left gate and uphill path are the optional upper extension. The trail page includes that extension within its longer four-stage description; do not follow it automatically when choosing the easier circuit.
The main track is firm gravel with climbs and descents, including short steeper sections. Benches provide pauses around the water. If gradient matters to your group, discuss the route with the Trust before travel; a surfaced circuit is not completely flat. Our elevation-gain guide helps distinguish a small total climb from individual steep sections.
Prepare parking and any mobility hire
Check the current visitor information before departure. It currently requires the JustPark app and an active account for member check-in and non-member payment. Members park free; charges apply to other visitors. This is more specific than the trail page's older pay-and-display wording.
For a Tramper, the trail page asks for booking 48 hours ahead. Arrange availability rather than arriving with a guaranteed hire in mind. Keep dogs on leads and finish the shore circuit back at the same car park within daylight; current visitor information lists the tarn as open dawn to dusk.
