Skyline Trail: Choose the Headland Return Within Your Parking Slot
Plan Cape Breton’s headland walk, the full return and the 2026 parking reservation rules.

Take Skyline’s main trail to the headland boardwalk and return the same way if the ocean overlook is your priority. The view follows the Cabot Trail down the mountain toward the Gulf of St. Lawrence. You do not need the longer forest loop to reach it, but you do need enough time to walk back within your parking period.
Choose the return before the fork
From the trailhead at 19625 Cabot Trail, stay left at the fork for the main trail and boardwalk. The official 2026 guide gives about 6.5 km (4 mi) return and approximately two hours. Retrace it to the parking lot after the headland.
The alternative forest loop is about 8.2 km (5.1 mi), taking 2.5–3 hours. It reconnects with the main trail and headland access, then returns to the lot. Choose it only if the longer return fits your parking period and daylight. The boardwalk has steps, and you must stay on it to protect fragile headland plants. Dogs are prohibited; give moose and other wildlife plenty of space.
A late arrival does not extend the four hours
Parking reservations are required June 26–October 25, 2026. Arrive no earlier than ten minutes before and no later than one hour after the chosen start time. For example, the noon slot permits arrival from 11:50 am to 1 pm, but parking ends at 4 pm. Arriving at 1 pm leaves three hours, which can consume the longer loop’s entire published estimate before pauses or delays. Choose the shorter return or arrive near the start.
Bring the confirmation, government photo ID and vehicle plate number; the named person must be present. There is no re-entry and no back-to-back booking. Drop-offs and roadside parking are prohibited. The enhanced Skyline Sunset Hike has its own reservation exception; ordinary park admission alone does not replace a parking booking.
Match the parking category to your vehicle. The page contains conflicting oversized-vehicle details, so contact the park at 902-224-2306 if those affect you. Check current trail conditions with the park before traveling, especially after storms; a parking booking is not weather clearance. Route-shape planning helps compare the two full returns.
