Checking the route

El Palmar’s Sendero Histórico follows the river landscape between the former administration area and the historic ruins. Walk it in either direction, then retrace to the same starting area: the official 1 km is one way, making this a planned 2 km (1.2 mi) return before any parking approach or exploration among the ruins.

Reach the walking area first

The park entrance is on RN 14 at kilometer 198. APN’s arrival warning explains that the visitor services area is another 12 km along gravel, with no internal transport available. Arriving at the highway gate on a long-distance bus does not complete the approach.

Use your own vehicle or arrange a remís from Ubajay to the relevant walking area and back. Some buses stop at the entrance but do not pick up passengers there. Confirm the return arrangement before leaving town, rather than planning to hail a bus after the walk.

Follow the river’s working history

The official route description calls Sendero Histórico a linear, self-guided walk of moderate difficulty. Begin at the former Intendencia area or the ruins, follow the signed trail through gallery forest and return along it. Do not confuse a one-way interpretation walk with a closed circuit.

The ruins include traces of a chapel, cemetery, living areas and kilns used in limestone processing. The Río Uruguay was a communication and trading route, so the wooded riverside setting helps explain the buildings rather than merely decorating them. Stay within the authorized historic area and leave archaeological material untouched.

Keep the walking cutoff separate from camping access

Pedestrian and vehicle trails operate 08:00–18:00. The park’s September 22–April 30 general visiting hours begin at 07:00, while round-the-clock access described for camping services does not grant nighttime trail access. Finish the return walk and internal drive within the relevant instructions.

Check current restrictions through APN’s linked park channels or elpalmar@apn.gob.ar before traveling. The river beach is a separate activity with seasonal bathing controls; reaching it during a history walk is not permission to swim.
